NSA Reportedly Collects 5 Billion Records A Day

By Aglaia Staff

The NSA collects nearly 5 billion records a day on the locations of cell phones overseas to create a huge database that stores information from hundreds of millions of devices, including those belonging to some Americans abroad, the Washington Post reported Wednesday.

Documents provided to the Post by NSA leaker Edward Snowden detail how this database is able to track people worldwide and map out their relationships with others.

The NSA inadvertently gathers U.S. location records, along with the billions of other records it collects by tapping into worldwide mobile network cables, the Post reported.

The database and projects designed to analyze it have created a mass surveillance tool for the NSA, allowing it to monitor individuals in a way never seen before.

NSA analysts can look at the data and track an individual’s movements throughout the world. They can then map out the person’s relationships with others and expose previously unknown correspondence.

The agency collects the large amount of cell phone data in order to find out who is interacting with targets the agency is already tracking, even though most of the records collected are not relevant to national security.

The number of Americans who are tracked as part of the data collection overseas is unclear from the Snowden documents, and a senior intelligence official told the Post it is “awkward for us to try to provide any specific numbers.”

U.S. officials told the Post the programs that collect cell phone data are strictly geared towards tracking foreign intelligence targets, and are not against the law.

Jaipur Literature Festival – This Year

By Sunil Kumar

The cerebral orgy has ended. According to the organizers and sources, there were nearly 200,000 footfalls this year, compared to the 120,000 last year. As I sum up my impressions of this year, I would like to state that despite all the controversies, the fest is a trailblazer of sorts as it has spawned a slew of similar events across the country.

The music in the JLF this year was tacky; compared to the lively beat we had last year. Also, a delectable tall blonde(or a brunette, I don’t remember) who was at the Tata Steel Front Lawns last year had mysteriously disappeared. The lady vanishes, perhaps! Now, for the pros and cons of the event, compared to the overhyped visit of Oprah last year, His Holiness the Dalai Lama was distinctly mild, rational, humble and gave simple, ethical practical advice. I am about to post a video of his talk on my YouTube channel, in case any of you who read this want to see it.

Flashback: in case my memory of this year fades away in a few seconds. “The Roots of Yoga” session with David White, Jim Mallinson, Mark Singleton and Birad Rajaram Yajnik attempted to project Hindu mystical ways as a universal belief system. David White gave a detailed historical perspective on the roots of one of India‘s most famous cultural exports. For anybody familiar with the idea as defined in our shastras; Patanjali‘s “Yoga Sutras” are considered by many to be the “Bible”. The long discussion attempted to project Yoga as a way of life; that could be enriched by more global contact.

Ruchir Sharma, Edward Luce and Gurcharan Das waxed eloquently on India’s trajectory in the “Inspite of the Gods Revisited” Session. While Gurcharan Das pointed out the lacunae in the country’s growth story, Luce gave a slightly different perspective. Both of them seemed to agree that India’s soft power and intellectual process lay in its freedom of expression and ability to deliberate. Although this can sound a bit farcical with all the bans around, the session was enlightening due to the passion of the speakers and the participating audience.

Just three runs have come for England in the last 18 deliveries along with the loss of three wickets as well. This over from Ishant Sharma yielded just a single to Joe Root who gets off the mark with that.

India‘s army chief accused Pakistan on Monday of planning a shootout along Kashmir‘s de facto border in which two Indian soldiers died, and said he had instructed commanders to respond aggressively if there is a provocation from the other side.

“The attack on January 8 was premeditated, a pre-planned activity. Such an operation requires planning, detailed reconnaissance,” General Bikram Singh told a news conference in New Delhi.

Gen Singh said that the beheading of two Indian soldiers in the Pakistan army attack was unacceptable and against all rules of engagement.

“I expect all my commanders at the Line of Control to be both aggressive and offensive in the face of provocation and fire,” he added, He was speaking about an hour before commanders from both sides on the so-called Line of Control (LoC) dividing the Himalayan territory were due to hold talks to defuse tension after a week that saw two soldiers killed on each side. It was the most serious outbreak of violence in Kashmir since India and Pakistan agreed a ceasefire nearly a decade ago

India’s response to Pakistani firing at its posts in LoC in Jammu and Kashmir was “measured and perfect,” he said.

India reserved its right to retaliate against Pakistan at the time and place of its choice, won’t remain passive when attacked, the army chief said ahead of Indo-Pak flag meeting.

On the issue of India upholding the ceasefire, he said that the army would do so as long as adversary upholds it.

Directions were given to army commanders to respond immediately if provoked, he said.

The army chief offered his hearfelt condolences to the family of the 2 jawans who were brutally killed on the Indian side of the LoC.

Shikhar Dhawan stroked a brilliant century as Delhi defeated England by six wickets. This was the second consecutive loss for England in their warm-up matches and this gives them a lot of headaches ahead of the first ODI which begins on January 11th.

Kevin Pietersen was rested for this match and England opted to bat after winning the toss. They got off to a good start with Ian Bell scoring at a confident rate. Alastair Cook chipped in with a confident 44 before he was sent back by Sumit Narwal. The feature of the England innings was a 113 run partnership for the fourth wicket between Bell and Eoin Morgan. Morgan was at his attacking best as he smashed 52 off 55 balls. Bell, who scored a fine 91 in England’s first warm-up game against India A at Palam, scored a wonderful century to continue his good form. Craig Kieswetter finished things off in style by blazing an aggressive 41 off 27 balls as England notched up 294/5.

The Delhi attack featured Parwinder Awana and Ashish Nehra but their bowling looked ordinary. The pick of the Delhi bowlers Varun Sood who picked up 3/45 in his 10 overs.

Delhi were faced with a huge task ahead but Unmukt Chand and Shikhar Dhawan got the team off to a great start. The opening pair notched up 70 runs before Chand was dismissed for 37 by James Tredwell. The Delhi team lost some quick wickets before Milind Kumar joined Dhawan and steadied the ship.

Dhawan was at his authoritative best and took the attack to the England pace bowlers. He drove the pace quartet of Steven Finn, Dernbach, Meaker and Chris Woakes through the covers. The moment the pacers dug it in short he was quickly into position to play the pull shot.

Milind Kumar, at the other end, showed a lot of maturity and paced his innings to perfection. Whether it was playing the slash over deep third man or driving on the up, Milind had an answer to everything that was thrown at him. Dhawan got to his ton with a big six off Tredwell before he was snapped up by Joe Root for 110. The knock came off just 109 balls and included 14 fours and three sixes.

Rajat Bhatia joined Milind Kumar and they ensured that there were no further jolts. Bhatia slammed an unbeaten 45 and finished off the run-chase with a flourish as they put together a 103 run stand off just 72 balls.

All the England bowlers struggled to check the flow of runs and their attack looked pedestrian. This second consecutive loss gives England further problems ahead of the five match ODI series.

Today, we live in a coded universe. The social network is an extension of the actual universe; the nuts and bolts of real existence. Life is merely an attempt at unravelling a greater mystery; the universe. There are more than 200 countries on the globe, people trying to make sense of their reason for being on the planet; grappling for food, water, money, education, ideas.

Some cynic once coined the term, “Fifteen minutes of fame.” In the social network, everybody is an instant storyteller, conveying their thoughts over the ether to multiple people; courtesy the power of the internet. Sometimes, I’m happy at this miraculous interconnectedness; also distraught at times.

Nearly twenty years back, there was no such thing as the World Wide Web. Books could often be solitary friends; and the printed page a refuge from the incredible cynicism of the world; something that has increased today. Never mind the cussed blasphemy of global egotism; the ode to the self, something practically everybody including me indulges in.

Wealth is something everybody wants, needs and aspires for. I had the pleasure of listening to an august gathering of intellectuals lately. They all struck me as being partially farcical, but thank the world for the ability to voice my opinions; even if it is in the confines of this window.

I do not want this post to be linear; it’s as fuzzy logic as I can make it. In the power of the collective, the individual does matter; and in the Aglaia Universe ideas matter.

Northeast Celebrates Guru Nanak’s Birthday

By Sunil Kumar

The 544th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev was celebrated across the northeast on Wednesday focussing on his teachings and tenets of universal brotherhood.

This year, the celebration of the Guru’s birthday was aimed at fostering the spirit of brotherhood and spreading communal harmony among people, especially when some parts in the state are afflicted with ethnic strife. It was in Assam that Guru Nanak met Sankaradeva and spoke on the importance of universal brotherhood.

Guru Nanak is not only as known as the guru of the Sikhs but for the entire world as well and hence his title Jagat Guru. The special day began with kirtan and we had singers from Punjab. It was followed by geet mala. Assam has a special reverence for the Guru because it was here that he met Sankaradeva and emphasized on the importance of universal brotherhood. This year, the state had witnessed ethnic strife and we need to look into his teachings to learn more about the spirit of universal brotherhood,” said a member of Fancy Bazaar Sikh Temple in Guwahati.

Arunachal Pradesh chief minister Nabam Tuki wished people on Guru Nanak Jayanti, extensively celebrated as Gurpurab across India and the world.

“Guru Nanak Jayanti is about reliving the teachings that are quoted in the sacred Sikh scripture Guru Grant Sahib, the holy book in which hymns of Sikh Gurus are quoted. I believe the celebration would not only be an inspiration for the followers of Sikhism but also to others as teachings of Guru Nanak are universal,” Tuki said in a statement.

Guru Nanak Jayanti is one of the several auspicious religious festivals in Sikhism celebrated to commemorate and remember the birth and philosophy of Guru Nanak, the first Sikh guru and founder of Sikhism (1469 AD – 1539 AD). Tuki expressed hope that the occasion would strengthen the bond between all religious communities and foster peace and tranquility.

Arunachal Pradesh governor General (Retd) JJ Singh on Wednesday called upon the Sikhs to imbibe righteous values of Sikhism and stay rooted to their cultural heritage and tradition. Attending the 544th birth anniversary celebrations of Guru Nanak at Gurudwara Saheb, Naharlagun near here, Singh exhorted them to maintain the spirit of sacrifice and community service and help people.

Jab Tak Hai Jaan

 Jab Tak Hai Jaan

In a Yash Chopra world; everything is punctuated by love, reality is in a distortion field and everybody lives in grand castles; or something similar. We all know that truth can be rather different, but there is no harm in a dream. The movie name was ironic; as it turned out to be his last outing. Despite a few critics; ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ is a fitting end to the Yash Chopra saga.

Meet Samar Anand(Shah Rukh Khan); a character straight from Mr. Chopra’s storybook; a musician and waiter who is in love with a rich heiress, Meera Thapar(Katrina Kaif). Now, Samar possesses the capacity to charm anybody and everybody; and has a heart of gold. If we could more people like this in real life, I would indeed be very happy. Samar promises to teach Thapar a Punjabi song, and wants to learn the Queen’s English in return.

Hindi film stereotypes abound in the conversations with God; Jesus here to be precise. A freestyle dance sequence was one of the best parts of this movie, in my opinion. Made at a budget of a paltry fifty crores; a little less by contemporary Bollywood standards, the movie has blockbuster locations such as  Canary Wharf, Ladakh and the great English outdoors. The pacing is a little stilted at times; and the music from Rehman is not as great as expected from him. Gulzar should learn a trick or two from Javed Akhtar to make the lyrics a little palatable for current audiences.

In the beginning, or the middle. Samar suffers a knock on his head and we learn that this is the reason why we met the intense brooding Major in Ladakh, who likes to sing Rabbi Shergill songs for stress relief. The Discovery channel photo-journalist Akira(Anoushka Sharma) has been treated to the inner life of Samar Anand courtesy his personal diaries. As her future hinges on the documentary being produced on him; she invites him to London again.

Twist here; Shah Rukh again suffers a bump on his head. Some of the screenplay elements defy commonsense, but movies are meant to be make-believe anyways. Before I give the whole story away, people who want to watch it can book a ticket. As a swansong for a great director, Jab Tak Hai Jaan is a mixed bag.
