Construction work of the Statue of Unity, a gigantic statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, began on his birthday, recently. 

The tribute to Sadar Patel, the first home minister of independent India who was nicknamed ‘Iron Man’, is set to rise 182 metres (600 feet) from a rocky river island in Gujarat.

Once completed it will be the world’s biggest, more than four times higher than the statue of Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro. 

Narendra Modi, who laid the foundation stone, has called on farmers to donate a piece of iron for the ‘Statue of Unity’ which will stand atop a huge stone plinth.

The collected metal will be melted down and used in the statue.

The total cost of the project is estimated at Rs 25 billion and will be funded with public funds and private donations.

The statue is being built by Turner Construction, the company behind the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai.

he Statue of Unity Project will include a unique museum and audio-visual department depicting the life and times of Sardar Vallabhbai Patel.

The public three-level base of the Statue – exhibit floor, mezzanine and roof – contains the Memorial Garden and a exhibit hall.

The observation deck at 500ft can accommodate 200 people at a time. 
The panoramic view from this level will enable visitors to see the Satpuda andVindhyachal mountain ranges, the 256kms long Sardar Sarovar Reservoir and the 12kms long Garudeshwar Reservoir.

A large modern canopied public plaza, overlooking the river and the Statue, will have food stalls, gift shops, retail kiosks and other visitor amenities.

The statue and surrounding area will be accessed by special boats to avoid vehicular traffic and pollution. Access to the statue is via boat ride (3.5kms).

A research centre dedicated to the research and development of subjects like Good Governance, Agriculture Development, Water Management and Tribal Development.
