Police and F.B.I investigators entered a basement on Prince Street in SoHo on Thursday morning. The whole thing was the case of Etan Patz, the 6-year-old boy whose disappearance 33 years ago sparked a worldwide hunt, the authorities said.

The building now being searched, 127B Prince Street, at the corner of Wooster Street, is less than a block from where Etan lived, at 113 Prince, and is along the route he was to have traveled in May 1979.

Investigators said that their plan was to tear apart the 13-by-62-foot space, removing drywall and testing it for traces of blood. The search was to be conducted with jackhammers and pickaxes.
