New Harry Potter Stage Play A Sequel

By Aglaia Staff

When news of the upcoming play “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” first broke in June, rumors swirled and everyone started making their own guesses on the production’s plot.

But new details have emerged on the two-part play, which author J.K. Rowling developed with playwright Jack Thorne and director John Tiffany. It is set to premiere on London’s West End in 2016.
Most notably, we now know the play will be a sequel and should be considered the series’ “eighth story,” set to take place 19 years later, contradicting early reports predicting the play would be a prequel.
The epilogue to the final book, ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,’ takes place 19 years after the events of the book, and sees Harry, along with his friends Ron and Hermione, dropping their children off at the Hogwarts Express.”

We’re also now seeing the first images of the play’s official artwork, which shows a child hunched inside a nest that appears to have black wings.
Below is a brief plot decription about what we can expect from the production:

“It was always difficult being Harry Potter and it isn’t much easier now that he is an overworked employee of the Ministry of Magic, a husband and father of three school-age children.
While Harry grapples with a past that refuses to stay where it belongs, his youngest son Albus must struggle with the weight of a family legacy he never wanted. As past and present fuse ominously, both father and son learn the uncomfortable truth: sometimes, darkness comes from unexpected places.”
Preview performances will officially begin on June 7 and July 30 will mark the world premiere opening night.

Three Shot On Tennessee State University Campus

By Aglaia Staff

One person has been killed and two others wounded by gunfire on the campus of Tennessee State University in  Nashville, police have said.

The shootings, which occurred just before 11 pm local time on Thursday, appeared to have stemmed from a dispute over a dice game in a courtyard, the Metropolitan Nashville police department said.

Police did not say whether those involved were students. It is unclear whether any arrests have been made.

Three people were taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, said Tanya Stone, operations supervisor for the Metro Nashville emergency communication centre.

Last week, three people were shot and wounded during a large house party near the Tennessee State University campus.

The incidents follow a string of gun violence at or near several US schools in October, including fatal shootings on the campus of Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff and near Texas Southern University in Houston.

Unidentified Foreigner Spotted Using Drone Near Parliament

By Aglaia Staff

In a major security alarm, an unidentified person was spotted flying a suspected drone near the high-security Vijay Chowk intersection close to Rashtrapati Bhavan and Parliament here on Saturday evening.

Police said that the incident was reported in the evening after a media person spotted a foreigner standing on the pavement near Vijay Chowk with a remote control in his hands. The foreigner was operating a flying object — suspected to be a drone — which was seen hovering around 20-30 feet above the ground, said a police official. -

The media person told police that when he confronted the foreigner, he stopped the device and fled in a car that was parked near the pavement. The media person further claimed that the vehicle had a diplomatic registration number pertaining to the Russian embassy, said the official. The incident was caught on camera and the footage — in which the unidentified man can be seen sporting a white T-shirt and shorts — has been handed over to Parliament Street police station, said the official. “

The issue came to our notice through the media. We are inquiring into it,” said DCP (New Delhi) Jatin Narwal. He said that a special team is studying the video footage and further action will be initiated accordingly. Police said that it is only when the person who was operating the device is questioned can it be known whether the gadget was actually equipped with a camera and if he was taking photographs or videos in the high-security zone. Meanwhile, following the incident, security was tightened in and around Parliament Street and several police teams were deployed in the area.

Donald Trump Loses It; Calls Sanders Maniac And Communist

By Aglaia Staff

Just 24 hours after the first Democratic debate, Donald Trump spoke to a crowd of supporters and gave his thoughts on what the candidates said. In addition to his usual criticism of Hillary Clinton, Trump went hard after progressive favorite, Sen.  Sanders.

Ever since announcing his presidential campaign back in June, the billionaire real estate mogul has vaulted to the top of the Republican primary field. Despite making controversial comments about Hispanics, women, and other minority groups, the conservative base of the party continue to support the former host of “The Apprentice.” During an Oct. 14 campaign rally in Richmond, Virginia, Trump went on the attack.

“I watched last night as Hillary and Bernie Sanders, they just couldn’t give away things fast enough,” Trump told the crowd. The Republican front runner had the crowd on their feet booing the Democratic candidates as he pointed out the “free stuff” they wanted to give to the American people. “They want heath care for illegal immigrants. They want drivers licenses for illegal immigrants,” Trump said, noting that, “They want, listen to this, social security for illegal immigrants.”

Trump then showed some sympathy for Clinton, referring to her as a “poor women,” citing the fact that she was forced to “give everything away” when standing next to Bernie Sanders. “The poor woman, she’s gotta give everything away because this maniac that was standing on her right was giving everything away, so she’s following! That’s what’s happening.”

Continuing his attack on Sanders, Trump referred to the Vermont senator as a “socialist” and a “communist.” “This socialist-slash-communist, okay? Nobody wants to say it,” Trump said as the crowd cheered. Warning his supporters, if Sanders is elected, they should expect to have their taxes raised to 90 percent.

Despite the charges of “socialism,” Sanders has spoken about using tax money to invest in rebuilding the country’s infrastructure, universal healthcare, and offer paid family leave, all programs that are prevalent in most industrialized nations around the world. Trump told the Virginia crowd that their taxes would be raised to 90 percent, a number that Sanders hasn’t ever said, but those who would see their taxes increased would be the wealthiest people and corporations in the country. A group that most likely didn’t attend Trump’s campaign rally.

When John Lennon Was Starting Up

By Aglaia Staff

John Lennon would have turned 75 on Friday.

He was two months past his 40th birthday when he was murdered as he entered his apartment building, the Dakota, on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, on Dec. 8, 1980.

Absent from the music business for five years — most of it spent living the quiet life of a house husband and father in New York — he had just returned to recording. The “Double Fantasy” album he made with his wife, Yoko Ono, had been in stores less than a month. A single from the album, “Just Like Starting Over,” pretty much said it all.

This “starting over” was chronicled in a profile by Robert Palmer in The Times on Nov. 9, a month before the murder. The article, based on a series of interviews with the couple during the making of “Double Fantasy” and after its completion, featured a reflective Lennon and began like this:

“ ‘Is it possible to have a life centered around a family and a child and still be an artist?’ asked John Lennon.”

He answered his own question as Mr. Palmer interviewed the couple in their apartment. “In a way,” he said, “we’re involved in a kind of experiment. Could the family be the inspiration for art, instead of drinking or drugs or whatever? I’m interested in finding that out.”

In another of the interviews with Mr. Palmer, Lennon said: “You know what I listened to for the last five years? Muzak! For the kind of chores I was doing around the house, it was perfect. I know people are going to say, ‘Oh, that’s because he’s got to be 40 and got soft.’ Well, it might be that; it’s irrelevant to me. The attitude is that when you change when you get older, there’s something wrong with that, but the world is stupid enough as it is; if the young were running it, it would be really dumb. Whatever changes I’m going through because I’m 40, I’m thankful for, because they give me some insight into the madness I’ve been living in all my life.”

Lennon’s son Sean was then 5, and it was not always certain that he would be raised in New York; both Lennon and Ms. Ono fought immigration battles for years, but when Sean was an infant, the last hurdle was cleared when Lennon was granted permanent-resident status, despite an old marijuana conviction that might have resulted in his deportation.

“This is the best place to bring up a Eurasian child,” Lennon said in a 1976 article reporting on the hearing that decided the matter. “This city is cosmopolitan. Everywhere else, there’s only one flavor.”

The article began: “Yesterday, all of John Lennon’s troubles seemed so far away, and now it looks as though he’s here to stay.”

He wasn’t.

Saudi Woman Cuts Off Tamilian’s Arm

By Aglaia Staff

Saudi Arabian officials have arrested a Saudi woman who chopped off the arm of a 56-year-old maid from Mungileri village near Katpadi in Tamil Nadu.

Officials with the Indian embassy in Riyadh took up the case with Saudi authorities at the highest level after learning that the employer of Kasthuri Munirathnam severed the maid’s right arm after she complained to officials that the family she was working for ill-treated her.

Indian diplomats in Saudi Arabia told TOI on Thursday that the Al-Sahafa police in Riyadh initially investigated the case but, because of the heinous nature of the crime, handed over the probe to the General Intelligence Directorate (Al Mukhabarat Al A’amah), the foremost intelligence agency in the kingdom.

Kasthuri was in a critical condition but has stabilised and doctors are treating her in Kingdom Hospital in Riyadh.

Anil Nautiyal, first secretary (labour) at the Indian embassy in Riyadh, said the mission is pursuing the case with the Saudi Arabian ministry of foreign affairs.

Kasthuri’s son Mohan told TOI from Vellore that his mother Kasthuri sustained severe injuries in the attack by the woman of the house, whose name Saudi authorities have withheld.

Love Story That Cost GVK Biosciences Its International Reputation

By Aglaia Staff

A GVK Bio whistle-blower‘s personal crisis led to EU suspending approval for its generic drugs.

A torrid love affair between two employees resulted in the international scrutiny of GVK Biosciences and a ban on marketing of around 700 generic drugs tested by the facility.

The employee, in love with a junior, left with her in 2011, prompting the girl’s parents to approach the police. As a result, GVK Biosciences — one of the largest Contract Research Organisations based in Hyderabad — dismissed the employee.

The police, during the investigation, went through the employee’s emails and found that he had written to every major drug regulatory authority in the world raising doubts about the quality of clinical research conducted at GVK Biosciences. The disgruntled employee’s emails served their intended purpose, at least for him.

International medicine agencies sought to inspect GVK Biosciences’ Hyderabad facility and alleged manipulation of data by the organisation. The European Union banned 700 drugs tested by GVK Biosciences in July this year after which the Indian government suspended the EU Free Trade Agreement (EU FTA) talks that were to resume in August after a two-year break.

It was found that the employee, though married and blessed with two children, had an illegitimate affair. He resigned from GVK Biosciences in September 2011 to sort out/resolve this issue but started blaming GVK Biosciences for his personal issue,” said Dorothy Paul, the company’s spokesperson.

The employee did not respond to email queries sent by The Hindu on October 6.

Between January and October 2013, the whistle-blower sent 15 emails to the United States Food & Drug Administration (USFDA), the World Health Organization (WHO), the Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety (AGES) and the National Agency for Medicines and Health Products Safety (ANSM), requesting them to audit the facility. The emails have been seen by The Hindu.

“After thorough internal investigations on the anonymous emails, GVK Biosciences filed a police complaint,” added the spokesperson. Citing his reasons for the revelations in one of the 15 emails to USFDA, the employee wrote, “cruel politics of selfish senior employees” prompted him to complain against GVK Biosciences.

Reacting to the ban by European drug regulators, the Commerce Ministry said in a release that it was “disappointed by and concerned” at the ban on “one of the flagship sectors of India”, as the story snowballed into the latest setback to the reputation of India-made generic drugs.

The ban had come in the backdrop of increasing tensions, with multinational pharmaceutical companies accusing India of having a hostile intellectual property climate. The Indian generic drug-makers had countered by accusing big pharma of using patents as an excuse to keep affordable Indian medicines from the access of poor patients.

“The IPA is deeply concerned about the damage it has caused to the reputation of the Indian pharmaceutical industry as a reliable supplier of safe, effective and quality medicine at very competitive prices to the EU Member States and their people. The banning of these 700 drugs merely on a suspicion of “manipulation” of ECGs of healthy volunteers and without sufficient evidence was uncalled for. The inspector had erred, yet the Agency did not intervene, in spite of the error being brought to its notice by the government. It only leaves doubt about its intention,” said D.G. Shah, secretary-general of Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance (IPA), a lobby of domestic drug-makers.

G.N. Singh, Drug Controller-General of India (DCGI), confirmed that he knew about the whistle-blower. “We do not know why the whistle-blower — if that was his intention — did not approach the Indian regulators first. Having said that, one must understand that there is a bigger game being played out here. I have repeatedly stated that multinational pharmaceutical companies constantly use incidents like this to bring disrepute to Indian generic drug makers,” he said.

An emotionally angry Simbu said, “I have been in this industry since I was a 9 months old child and I will not tolerate someone new coming in and breaking the cinema family. I won’t be quiet watching all this.

Referring to Vishal’s objection to leasing the Nadigar Sangam building out to SPI cinemas to construct a theatre among others, Simbu questioned if Vishal could make a career in films without theatres. Responding to Vishal’s argument of there are schools in the locality, Simbu asked, “Is theatre a TASMAC (liquor) shop?… If a theatre can’t come up there, what else should be built there? A bar or a club? …Will a true cinema-loving theatre owner ever screen a film of yours tomorrow?”

Don Zimmer Passes Away

By Aglaia Staff

Don Zimmer, a current Tampa Bay Rays advisor who has spent the last six decades working in professional baseball as a player and coach, died Wednesday after a nearly two-month hospital stay. He was 83.

Zimmer, who has been working with the Rays in a limited-time capacity since 2004, underwent heart surgery in April to fix a leaky valve. Initially expected to only need a couple days of recovery before going home, his body never recouped properly. Topkin reported in late April. that Zimmer needed a ventilator to breathe and his progress was “slow” to do so on his own.

A baseball lifer, Zimmer goes down as one of the most indelible faces in MLB history. Working largely as a reserve infielder, he played 12 big league seasons, starting with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1954. That call-up would start a 60-year relationship with America’s pastime, featuring stops at nearly every corner of the United States.

Zimmer played for the Dodgers, Cubs, Mets, Reds and Washington Senators. Working all over the diamond depending on need, Zimmer enjoyed limited individual success as a player. He made the 1961 All-Star Game but played in over 100 games just four times in his career. He had a career .235 batting average and hit 91 career home runs, with his playing days largely defined by his unquestioned work ethic and willingness to fill whatever role was needed.

Those traits served Zimmer well in his legendary coaching career.

Starting first in the minor leagues, Zimmer again worked his way up through the system before earning a gig with the Montreal Expos in 1971. He would become a fixture on a major league bench over the next three-plus decades, where he’d become one of the best-traveled coaches in history.

Zimmer coached or managed nine different franchises, including three different stints with the Yankees and two stops with the Red Sox. Not even the fiercest rivalry in baseball could keep someone as talented as him off a major league bench.

His five-year stint (1976-80) in Boston served as his greatest success as a manager. Zimmer’s teams never made the playoffs, but they were better than .500 every season and he had two campaigns with a .600 winning percentage. It’s possible he would have had a much longer managerial career had the wild card been in play then.

Zimmer’s only playoff appearance as a manager came in 1989 with the Cubs, a season in which he won the Manager of the Year award. Chicago lost to the San Francisco Giants in the NLCS. Overall, Zimmer went 885-858 as the man in charge with the Padres, Red Sox, Rangers and Cubs each giving him a shot.

Where Zimmer found his true calling was being the second in command.

Joe Torre tabbed him for his third and final stint in New York in 1996, and the two became one of the most successful clubhouse pairings of the modern era. Torre and Zimmer helped guide the Yankees to four World Series titles, a dynasty that helped end two decades of futility in the Bronx.

Zimmer also had his greatest moment of infamy in New York. During a bench-clearing brawl between the Yankees and Red Sox in 2003, Zimmer charged at Boston pitcher Pedro Martinez, who promptly threw him to the ground. While many criticized Martinez for his part in the fight, it was a quintessential Zimmer moment. He loved the game to the point where, even at an advanced age, he’d start a fight he had no chance to win in order to protect his players.

Torre is one of the infinite members of baseball royalty who owe gratitude to Zimmer. Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, Carl Yastrzemski and many others had their lives touched by this great man.
